You can't make a trip to the seaside without having fish and chips on the promenade. In truth, we thought we wouldn't be able to, with a five-year-old daughter with coeliac disease. How wrong we were. Wolfies of Hove, a short drive from Brighton seafront, prides itself on its gluten-free fish and chips.
They're available daily and use a completely separate gluten-free fryer to guarantee no cross-contamination. And because of that fryer, there's barely anything off the menu, so if you fancy a battered sausage, you go ahead and treat yourself.
The staff couldn't be more helpful, and although there's a short wait, at least you know it's because they're taking coeliac seriously. Our daughter had been talking about fish and chips throughout our holiday, so to be able to treat her made her and our day. And the fish was an absolute delight.
With no reaction after scoffing a large bag of fish and chips (the children's portion is excellent value), the only downside was the weather. There's not much seating inside the restaurant (it's a traditional fish and chip shop at heart), but we're British, and there's nothing more British than sitting on a bench wearing a raincoat, overlooking the beach in dreary conditions, with a bag of chips on your lap. Perfect.
